Atlanta’s HR Department has a number of interesting employee programs and Division focuses. Here are a few :

"Hooked on Books,” the City of Atlanta’s book club is co-sponsored by the Mayor’s Office and the Department of Human Resources.

In addition to self-guided book discussions, the Club has also hosted several authors including Renowned Author Pearl Cleage, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, Award-Winning Actress Victoria Rowell and The Honorable Marvin Arrington, Sr. Each of these authors gave the group behind-the-scene insights into their book’s development and gave live readings of select passages. Discussions were held at noon on the second floor of City Hall.

The current and 59th Mayor of Atlanta, Kasim Reed, touts his favorite books include Master of the Senate by Robert Caro and The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass.

Rising Stars Program
The Rising Stars Development Program began in the fall of 2007, to prepare employees with leadership potential to move up to the next level. This is a nine month long program. There are two tracks: the senior management track for current managers who have the potential to move into executive level leadership; and the aspiring leaders’ track for employees who have not had city government management experience or whose skills may need refreshing.

Organizational and Employee Development Unit
This Unit is responsible for performance management, executive coaching, career development, soft skill training, management and supervisory development, team building, organizational research, customer service enhancements, computer software instruction, New Employee Orientation, Rising Stars Leadership Development Program, Employee Book Club and basic skills enhancement. The Unit's specific activities are determined by requests from 15 different departments and also by critical citywide initiatives such as performance management and customer service. Daily tasks include researching, planning, designing, coordinating, and evaluating development programs. The Unit also provides performance consulting to department leaders in an effort to achieve department and City goals.
