Substance abuse and behavior disorder counselors help those with alcohol, drug, gambling and even eating disorder problems. They typically counsel in group settings, but also one on one. They are trained to offer coping strategies that are connected to healthy behaviors. While the counselor has an identifiable client, they also work with the client’s family members and friends to aid in their ability to cope and assist the addict with meaningful and healthy support. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that employment for this career is projected to grow through 2018 by 21%.
This month, the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services announced new credentialing changes to help increase the state’s projected need for more addiction counselors. Statewide there are about 7400 licensed and they seek to increase that number to 10000.
