Repetition – repeats the verbal message person is sending.
Contradiction- can confuse the message individual is trying to send.
Substitution- body language is often a substitute for verbal messages. Recall when someone has rolled their eyes upward to indicate their opinion or feelings and this was a substitute for that person’s oral response.
Complementing- sometimes we use a “high five” or “thumbs up” to indicate our approval to add even more attention to our verbal expression: “good job” comment.
Accenting- we often can use our hands or arms to accentuate our words. This is a way of reinforcing our message or to give it greater impact with our audience. Waving or pointing our finger is one example.
