Team Building - Stages of Development

Q.  What are the stages of Team Development?

A.  Forming, storming, norming, performing.

Forming Stage: all about setting objectives and goals, getting to know each other.  The team leader learns what outside experiences each member brings to the group and to understand how to use that effectively.

Storming:  establishment of the process by which the team interacts; disruption occurs from negative feelings between some members; conflict is a normal part of the process with differing opinions being expressed, but needs to be managed and controled.

Norming:  members understand the process and begin to relate well to each other.  Consensus is reached among participants.

Performing:  work accomplishments lead toward goal progress and attainment.

This model of team development stages was established by Bruce Tuckman in 1965.  He claims that as teams mature and develop ability, the leadership style changes and goes from directing, to coaching, to participating and delegating.  Most organizations value leaders who progress with their teams through these stages as this process produces effective organizational development.  Learn more about team development principles and resources from the links below.
