The History of Learning and Training

Integrated Performance Support - performance support systems can use expert systems to make decisions formerly made by humans; job performance aids can compensate for lack of training and experience; improve job quality, and increase productivity.

Job Support - Job support is a form of training that does not require the worker to learn, but simply to know where to find the changing information they need.

Individualized Instruction - Individualized instruction is the basis for computer-based training; replaces the teacher with systematic or programmed materials.

Systematic Training -

• Training conducted by supervisors who are also trained instructors.

• Training group sizes should be limited to 8 to 12 people.

• Job analysis is performed before training starts.

• Training conducted on-the-job decreases production down time.

• Personal training increases student loyalty to organization and career.  Read more

Vestibule Training - training conducted away from the job location but in a miniature creation of the job site to duplicate the experience and enhance training.

The Classroom – off the job training in a safe setting to prevent distractions to the live production work environment..

Apprenticeship - usually a defined program of instruction for beginners that takes several years to advance to the master level; most often applies to skilled trades.

On-The-Job Training - a popular training method that allows for minimal downtime and absence from the main production and work environment. Practice and instruction utilized actual job tools and work area to enhance learning.

Creating Simulations For Training and Collaboration

Immersive Workspaces offers a new way to design media-rich online training and collaboration programs.  They develop programs that redefine simulations and interaction used in learning, education and training.

Immersivespaces.com touts they can "create a virtual campus, which employs a range of different teaching and training techniques – from scenario-based role playing exercises to the more traditional seminar-based lesson delivery – provides people with experiences that are perceived as real."

"The media-rich environment provided by Immersive Workspaces means that lesson plans and curriculum material is simple to archive and can be made easily accessible to students. This 'always-on' environment allows them to proceed and assimilate material at their own pace to develop a deeper understanding."
