The Trades and development programs offer anyone looking for a career, a choice with options. Here's one insight from a single parent who took advantage of a trade apprenticeship program in Saskatchewan, Canada.
“There have been times that I have been a single parent, and financially it hasn’t been an issue because of the wages in the trades. Apprenticeship also gives you the ability to do other things, like move or find new opportunities. I think a lot of young people don’t realize what they want to be—I didn’t. I tell students, four years go by really quickly. If you indenture now, you can be done soon, have money to go to school if you want to, and have a ticket you can always fall back on. I don’t think anyone can predict where they’ll be in five or ten years down the road, so the best you can do is give yourself a lot of tools and skills to fall back on. If you’re looking at a trade, build on what you enjoy. Really make sure you choose something you enjoy and investigate it so you’re aware of what you’re getting into.” (Page 3, Apprenticeship In Action: Loreena Potts, Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Commission)
