OSHA Recognizes Best Safety Practices of Chevron Energy Solutions

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration has certified Chevron Energy Solutions Fort Detrick Central Utility Plant in Fort Detrick as a "star" site.  This is the highest honor in its Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP).

The company's utility plant at Fort Detrick supplies power resources to the local U.S. Army Biodefense organization.   The Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) recognize employers and workers in private industry and federal agencies that have implemented effective safety and health management systems, and maintain injury and illness rates below national averages for their industry.

To achieve this recognition, organizations must implement a Safety and Health Management System (SHMS), which among other priorities must include “senior management, including the top executive on site, who must act as a role model for how all employees should work to create a safe work environment.
The SHMS is a combination of policy, communications, and demonstrated behaviors that include recognizing employees for their safety and health efforts.  Read more about Michigan’s promotion of SHMS to improve safety and health.

The National Safety Council is a major provider of safety related training.  Checkout their website to learn about upcoming 2011 training.
