Leadership and delegation require clear understanding and directions. These are considered the 5 main levels of delegation:
Level 1: Proceed to implement my exact orders. Here there is no need to deviate or think about a different course of action. The leader gives a clear understanding for the subordinate to take a specific action.
Level 2: Find out more about the issue and report. This level requires some more input and discussion and the task is to bring more back to the leader.
Level 3: Find out more, create an outline of ideas or options and make recommendations. Bring back ideas, and outline and recommendations.
Level 4: Decide, act and report back. Gives the actor more independence to choose the best option and then proceed on his/her own method. The leader looks to the subordinate to use his/her own expertise and best judgment and to be kept informed on progress and results.
Level 5: Total independence is bestowed upon the subordinate to decide, act and results will be supported. The leader gives the ultimate delegation in that there is no need for the subordinate to give progress reports or outcomes from having decided and acted responsibly.
