Director of the Urban Institute's Program on Retirement Policy Richard W. Johnson discusses the trend of extended working ages in America.  The retirement age declined in the 1990s as older Americans increased participation in the labor force between the mid 1980s and 2000 (US Bureau of Labor Statistics Publications).

Some steps for Baby Boomers to take to prepare for retirement: create a plan; know the rate of return needed on your investments/savings to sustain the income you will need; diversify your investment portfolio; reinvent yourself based upon your interests, values, and available projects.

"Re-invent yourself – Most of us have our vocation or profession as our identity.  The first thing we ask a new acquaintance is what do you do?  That’s how we see others and we see ourselves.  Retiring is to give up that old identity and re-invent who we are.  We can be a Grandfather, golfer, fisherman, homemaker, blogger, handyman, volunteer or a combination of many things. The least important thing in our retirement identity is what we used to be and the most important is who we are now. –Grandpastick (Reference: seniorliving.about.com )
