Writing SMART Goal Statements by Joni Rose (Suite101.Com)

Writing goal statements using the SMART (specific, measurable, agreed to, realistic and time phased) system ensures a goal can be communicated and achieved.

SMART has been consistently recognized as a fundamental approach in moving ones’ career forward with progress and using steps appropriate for the individual.  The idea is to write and follow a goal statement that you can achieve.   Success is assured from using smaller goal steps that are measurable, but also realistic as well as the time to finish them.  Here Joni Rose gives an example of a clear SMART goal statement and use of some tools to provide even more options for career development.

SMART Goal Statement: By the end of November of [insert year], I will be in a position that fits with my Myers Briggs Type Indicator (e.g. ENFJ), utilizes my top ten transferable skills, fits my top five career values, correlates with my top 5 passions, provides for the top five work environment preferences I have (e.g. short commute, open concept office, matrix management style, natural light in work area and perfume free environment). I will join a job search club, research to create a list of 50 companies that fit with my good fit profile and participate in ten or more networking events.
