Last Friday’s news of a Pennsylvania (PA) jury concluding the guilt of a sexual predator in 45 out of 48 counts against, provides an excellent case study for those interested in “institutional” and “organizational” development issues. On the one hand, we note this PA case was cloaked in the issues surrounding a high profile and almost hero-like figure, a seemingly model citizen of his community, and on the other side a monster, manipulator and predator. The institution and organization in this case involved the issues of “protecting itself at all costs” and of “demanding and grooming unquestionable loyalty”, has left a black mark larger and darker that millions of dollars to yet be spent and lost goodwill will eventually be associated with. The same old story of not respecting the feedback from underlings present in this case resulted, as in many similar minor case examples, in the misperception of what good organizational values stand for. The end result has done significant damage to the “brand” and perception of the “mission” of this PA educational institution and even the local governmental services. Clearly, there is a major lesson to be learned about how much influence we allow from our societal and community icons, and the leaders of our community organizations, pervade our organizational groupthink!
