Possible Veiled Hiring Age Discrimination

A recent article by MainStreet.Com reports an incident were a job applicant had been asked about whether or not she was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP).  A labor lawyer noted the practice could be construed as a "veiled attempt" to discriminate against hiring older applicants since membership in AARP is restricted to people over 50 years of age.  Asking these types of questions is not recommended for any organizations hiring program.  While there may be times when asking about membership in an organization that is connected with the role of the position to be staffed is necessary, these types of situations are typically not the norm.
