Some recent research seems to be confirming some of the long held beliefs about birth order and its effects. For example, there appears to be a correlation between first borns and the following:
Generally they were shown to be smarter than their siblings on IQ tests;
They tend to be taller than siblings;
And, later siblings and younger siblings tend to be “loose cannons” and less educated;
First borns tend to be more represented in higher paying professions and jobs.
Second borns tend to be better negotiators and more adapt at sharing and avoiding conflict.
While there does appear to be some psychological basis for the research conclusions, there are other considerations, like the age gap between some siblings that mimic the first and later born effects. NOTE: Clearly, the labels applied to birth order are not in and of themselves, a reliable way to identify characteristics or personal traits.
