Writing a policy requires clarity and a framework of points or rules that contain the main goals the policy is expected to achieve.
For example, in developing a policy on workplace dress, a meaningful outline would include:
- An overall statement of purpose and the reasons for the policy
- The times, dates or seasons where different types of dress are allowed
- Clear examples and descriptions of what is appropriate and what is not appropriate
- Expiration, effective, or review dates if applicable
- Who it applies to, where and under what circumstances
- Any consequences for violating
- Clearly defined terms for suggestions and/or required aspects
- List the key points of contact for responsibility of writing and making changes to the policy
